One of my favorite Walt Whitman quotes:
“Only the kernel of every object nourishes;
Where is he who tears off the husks for you and me?”
Well, as many people like to remind us, no one is coming to save you, so start figuring things out for yourself.
I’m a big believer in simplicity – what is the kernel of truth you need to understand? What is the core thing you need to figure out about any given thing?
This is imperative when starting something new – whether it be a project or a job, or anything.
What do I really need to understand here?
I ask myself that question all the time. Especially as I navigate my new role as CMO at Ultralife. What foundational truth or truths do I need to understand about this company – and how will that “nourish” me and help me execute, focus on things that matter, and prioritize?
This is worthwhile time spent.
Thinking.
Getting to the kernels.
It helps silence the noise. Settle the dust.
Then move forward with confidence, urgency and excitement.
When does this line of thinking benefit you?
