I completed the Murph Challenge this weekend with a few friends (1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, 1 mile run – with a 20lb vest).
We’ve been doing this for a number of years on or around Memorial Day as way to honor the military – and those who died while serving.
The challenge is also an opportunity to support the annual fundraiser of the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
It’s also a great reminder of how important mindset is – as our team leader always delivers two key instructions before we start:
1) No complaining. This is supposed to be hard.
2) Finish. No matter what.
The weather this weekend was not ideal – mid 40’s, windy and raining – and as we got back from the first run I said to my friend, “the rain pelting our faces sucked – but damn, that was fun!”
His reminder at the start changed everything. Changed our mindset. Changed our outlook. Changed our perspective, our attitude, everything.
For a short time, anyway, “we embraced the suck” – in a healthy, positive way.
When I catch myself being negative or complaining – I try to remember those instructions – and flip my attitude as best I can.
Flip it, then rip it!
And finish!
